विद्याविनयसम्पन्ने ब्राह्मणे गवि हस्तिनि । शुनि चैव श्वपाके च पण्डिताः समदर्शिनः ।।

— unknown, unknown

Meaning:

True wisdom lies in perceiving, with the same perception, a learned and modest scholar, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and an outcast individual. The same inner essence is seen in all creatures regardless of their physical form, stature, or circumstances.

Essence:

The following shloka gives us a wonderful definition of wisdom. Krishna does not speak of equality in the usual sense. There is clearly a difference between a scholar, an animal, and a man from a marginalized community. However, according to the Bhagavad Gita, we should show no difference in the degree of respect we give them.

Consider a scene where a young professional enters a workplace. In that office, there is a CEO, a cleaner, and an intern there for the very first time. They differ in salary, duties, and status, but there is no inherent reason to show respect to one person and not the other.

This is sama-darshinah.

The Bhagavad Gita invites people to look beyond such perceptions.

It does not, however, mean downplaying differences between people or assuming everything is the same. Sameness is not equality; dignity is equality.

It also offers a valuable lesson for younger generations growing up in a society full of comparisons. Social media often tries to convince us to compare who is better off and who is lagging. When we stop using external measures to judge human value, comparisons no longer matter.

A richer person is not more valuable than someone else. Someone with fewer chances deserves dignity just as much.

Wise living, in reality, is not just about gaining information. Wise living is the capacity to look beyond the labels and recognize the individual.

This is perhaps why this wisdom is so relevant today. The beauty of life is not created through accomplishments alone. It comes from how we view the other beings around us.

As our outlook becomes less judgmental and more sympathetic, the world starts seeming quite different.

Wise living is not just being able to distinguish between one another. Wise living also means recognizing worth beyond these differences.
