कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन । मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि ।।
Meaning:
You control your actions, but you do not control their consequences. Do not make the fruits of your actions your only motive, nor become attached to inaction.
Essence:
No other message captures the modern condition as well as this passage from the Bhagavad Gita. It does not mean that there are no consequences to one’s actions. It means that Arjuna should know where he is really in control.
The trouble isn't being ambitious. The trouble is that we judge our effort solely by its consequences.
Now consider two students studying for the same exam. Both put in a lot of effort. One thinks every evening before bed about failure, what others will think, and how others will score higher marks. The other thinks about what they could do that day to improve their preparation.
They might have had the same conditions, but they experienced them completely differently.
That's the core of Karma Yoga. Pour all your energy into what is yours. The result of your work depends on several uncontrollable things: timing, the surrounding conditions, decisions of other people, unforeseen events, etc.
That doesn't mean that you should forget about the result.
But there is also a vital second step to the instruction: “Mā te saṅgo 'stvakarmaṇi” don’t get entangled in not doing. Detachment doesn't mean giving up because you don’t control the outcome. One can’t say, “Since I don’t control the result, it doesn’t matter.” Instead, act with total engagement, yet let go of the need to control what comes after.
This changes how we live our lives.
Make the preparations. Submit the application. Have a hard talk. Start the business. Take the exam. Offering the relationship your integrity.
Then let the outcome come without letting it determine your value.
This may be the deeper freedom Krishna provides: your effort is yours. Your peace need not be dependent on the result.
Life is not always beautiful when everything works out as planned. Life is beautiful when we learn to give our best to that which we can control and let go of the rest.
