Meaning:
I contemplate Lord Brahma, the manifestation of the Vedas and the golden creative force of the cosmos. I contemplate the four-headed Lord riding the swan. May Lord Brahma enlighten my mind with wisdom and intellect.
Essence:
Lord Brahma is said to be the creator of the universe, and this mantra invokes wisdom and illumination of the mind. However, creation is not limited to the birth of the universe. Creation is involved in every human activity. Every thought, every skill, and every solution is created out of nothingness.
Brahma's unique characteristic lies in his four faces. It beautifully depicts knowledge arising from several sources. It takes more than one viewpoint to comprehend the complexities of the world around us. With a more experienced mind, a person will try to examine a situation from various viewpoints to derive its true meaning.
For example, imagine an aspiring entrepreneur who comes up with an initial business idea but fails. It may be seen simply as a failure and abandoned altogether. But other questions could arise from the experience: what was not understood; what lessons were learned; what can be changed; and what could be created instead?
That’s the kind of mind that the mantra wants us to develop.
Lord Brahma is also connected with the Vedas as knowledge and wisdom. And his swan symbolizes something else as well. swan symbolizes discernment, the power to separate the wheat from the chaff.
In today’s world, information is available almost everywhere. You can get tens of thousands of answers in just seconds. But access to information does not necessarily mean wisdom. Wisdom is a completely different matter. It is about seeing what is really worth paying attention to. It is about figuring out what is worth believing, and what is worth acting on.
The motto thus calls not just for clarity of mind, but for enlightenment of mind.
Beauty in life is not something which one finds ready and waiting. Rather, we create it through our actions, thoughts, connections, efforts, and courage to start over.
This may be Brahma's greatest teaching: do not undervalue your mind's creativity.
You might never create an entirely new universe. You can create a new skill, a new concept, a new possibility, or a totally new page in your life’s story.
The divine manifests the moment the mind stops being a passive consumer of the world. It should grab the opportunity to create something worthwhile within it.
