Where Does Ego Sit in Your Life

Publish 27 th April, 2026

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less.”

C. S. Lewis
British author

The quote clarifies a common misunderstanding about humility. Many people associate humility with low esteem, low self-esteem or self-denial. However, C.S. Lewis presents a different perspective. He explains that humility does not mean undervaluing yourself or ignoring your worth. Instead, it is all about shifting the focus away from constant self-centered thinking. A humble person recognizes their value, but they do not do everything about themselves.

Humility versus low self-esteem

People usually confuse humility with thinking poorly of themselves. However, low self-esteem involves self-doubt and insecurity. Humility reflects balance and self-awareness. A humble person feels confident in their abilities. They don't need validation or attention. They neither exaggerate their importance nor diminish it. A balanced mindset allows them to interact with others more genuinely.

The role of the ego

Ego drives the need for recognition, praise, and comparison. People constantly think about how they appear to others. With that, they become trapped in self-focus. The quote suggests that true humility reduces the constant inner dialogue about oneself. You should not keep asking, how do I look or what do others think about me? Rather, as a humble person, you should focus on meaningful actions and contributions.

Relevance

Humility plays an important role in relationships. Also, it affects leadership and personal growth. For example, a humble leader listens to others. They value different perspectives and give credit when it is due. In friendships, humility allows people to connect freely. There isn't usually involvement of competition or ego. It creates space for understanding and respect. Besides, it fosters collaboration.

The lesson to take forward

The quote encourages you to develop self-awareness without becoming self-absorbed. Always acknowledge the strengths and achievements but never let them define your true identity or dominate your thoughts. Focusing more on others and on purposeful actions will help you build stronger relationships. Also, you can develop a more grounded sense of self. True humility brings quiet confidence and lasting respect.
